The Traditional Real Estate Career Path as a Real Estate Agent
The allure of becoming a real estate agent is undeniable. The promise of flexible hours, being your own boss, and the potential for high earnings draw many to the profession.
As Camille Schwaegerle explains, "When people think about an agent, they usually think about, oh, this is someone who has really flexible hours and they don't have a boss so they can set their own schedule."
However, success as an agent requires dedication and hard work. It's not just a job; it's a lifestyle.
Schwaegerle emphasizes, "The reality is, if you want to be successful, you really need to have a schedule. And it's become more of a lifestyle than a job. So you don't really turn off anything if you are a real estate agent.”
The demands can be significant, from client calls at all hours to weekend showings,
Schwaegerle notes, "Over 80% of the people end up leaving the business within the first five years of getting their real estate license, because they're not committed to the hard work and tenacity that it takes in order to build a sustainable business."
Building successful careers in real estate requires more than a license. It demands strong communication, negotiation, and business awareness.
Administrative and Operational Real Estate Roles
Behind every successful real estate agent, there's a dedicated team working diligently. Administrative and operational roles are crucial to the smooth functioning of any real estate business. These individuals are the unsung heroes who keep everything organized and on track.
Administration and operational roles include transaction coordinators, administrative assistants, and marketing assistants. These people play vital roles in supporting agents and ensuring seamless transactions. "They're the ones that are keeping everything together," Schwaegerle emphasizes. These are important real estate jobs.
These roles often involve managing complex schedules, coordinating showings and open houses, preparing marketing materials, and handling client inquiries. Transaction coordinators, for example, are vital for ensuring all the necessary paperwork is completed and deadlines are met throughout the closing process. They act as liaisons between agents, clients, lenders, and escrow companies.
Administrative assistants provide general support to agents, handling tasks such as scheduling appointments, answering phones, and managing correspondence. These real estate jobs provide valuable services to agents, freeing them to focus on building relationships with clients and closing deals.
Marketing assistants are key in creating and implementing marketing strategies to promote listings and build the agent's brand. Their work might include managing social media accounts, creating email newsletters, and designing flyers and brochures.
Leadership and Corporate Roles within Real Estate
The real estate industry also offers a range of leadership and corporate roles within real estate offices and franchises. These positions provide opportunities for career advancement and professional development. Leadership and corporate roles include team leaders, assistant team leaders, market center administrators, and directors of first impressions.
These positions often offer a more stable career path compared to the commission-based world of agents. They typically come with a regular salary and benefits.
Schwaegerle explains: "You get to be in the real estate industry. You get to have structure on an 8 to 5 job. You get paid a salary versus making commission income as a real estate agent, where you never know when your next closing is going to be."
Some individuals combine office work with part-time agent activities, creating a hybrid career. These office positions are essential for supporting the overall real estate business and fostering a positive work environment.
Specializing and Niche Markets in Real Estate
Real estate offers a variety of niche markets for those seeking a more specialized path. These niches enable professionals to focus on specific areas of interest and develop expertise.
"You can just specialize and maybe you become a real estate professional who just specializes in working with investors only," Schwaegerle suggests.
Other niche markets include luxury homes, ocean-view properties, and property management. "Maybe you don't even want to do sales, and you just want to have a property management business," Schwaegerle adds.
Specializing in a niche can be a rewarding way to build a successful and fulfilling real estate career and is a great option for those considering a real estate career change.
Finding Your Fit
Finding the right fit within the real estate industry is vital. As Schwaegerle explains on the podcast, "I read a great book a few years ago called Good to Great by Jim Collins, and he talks about the importance of being on the right seat, on the right bus."
Real estate is the bus, representing the broader industry and its diverse opportunities. The various roles—agent, administrator, marketer, team leader, and more—are the seats, each requiring a unique set of skills and personality traits. It's crucial to find the seat that aligns with your skills, interests, and personality.
This isn't just about finding any job; it's about discovering a career where you can truly flourish and feel fulfilled. A natural salesperson might thrive as an agent, while a detail-oriented individual might excel as a transaction coordinator. Someone passionate about design and marketing could find their niche promoting properties, while a leader might find their calling managing a team.
Your Real Estate Career Awaits
The real estate industry offers a diverse landscape of opportunities far beyond the common perception of just being an agent. Whether you're drawn to the dynamic world of sales, the support structure of administrative roles, the leadership potential in management, or the focused expertise of a niche market, there are numerous real estate careers to consider.
At the Schwaegerle Team, we believe in the "right seat on the right bus" philosophy. We're passionate about helping individuals explore the diverse landscape of real estate careers, discover their strengths and passions, and find the perfect role to thrive.
